Hello
Our top ten starts with a National Post story about at study by Morgan Stanley. They show that Canada leads in responsible resource development on many metrics and responsible balance sheet management.
Lyn Alden is always very helpful and with the markets so confusing, I included Lyn’s October 2023 investing newsletter.
The Shale Revolution has had so many consequences the last decade and now Peter Zeihan explains the changes going forward with the majors taking over. I included part 1 and 2.
My partner Peter Schenk composed a great summary of the Uranium Sector and he highlighted some comments from many brilliant minds.
On the real estate side, Steve Saretsky looks at the pain out there with these higher rates and the probable impact to the housing market. I also added a TC article about the major changes on the multiple vacation rental market. I posted some comments on my LinkedIn page, and I expect there will be lots of debate and legal challenges everywhere..
To add to the uncertainty in BC, the people at Resource Works explain the probable pitfalls with the province’s CleanBC program.
BC Energy Critic Ellis Ross was with The Rumble Room duo, and he gives his take on that Supreme Court Decision.
As the baseball playoffs get into the league championship series, Bruce Dowbiggin looks at the ‘Blew Jays” in usual candid and insightful way.
The arts are so important in society, and the great Douglas Murray recently presented at Oxford talking about that and what Shakespeare meant to society. That prompted an industry friend to share to send me a Dick Cavett interview with Sir Laurence Olivier. I shared that piece below and highlighted what the great actor said about the theatre.
When I shared this piece yesterday with some people, it prompted a good friend to sent me this after watching it.
“My late father was an English professor and a lover of Shakespeare. At our wedding in 2002 I asked him to read a favourite passage of literature and he chose the exact same thing that Olivier recited from The Tempest in this video. He spoke similarly with an English accent and understood how important cadence was to be reading something like this. It brought a tear to my eye this morning thinking of him. Thanks for sending.”
Have a great weekend.

Number 1- Posthaste: Canadian oil touted as best place to ride out the world's turbulent energy transition.
Even the (lefty?) academic Think Tanks say we are a leader on ESG in oil & gas…
One advantage of Canada’s energy sector is that producers don’t need high oil prices to be sustainable. Morgan Stanley analysis suggests that Canadian oil companies can maintain capital expenditures, meet dividend payments and net zero emission targets, and retire outstanding debt with WTI at US$65.
Number 2-The October 2023 investing newsletter is now available: Lyn Alden
This issue covers:
-Characteristics of a stable or unstable financial system.
-The increasing fiscal challenges in the US.
-Why the mid-1990s through early-2020s era of structurally falling interest rates is behind us.
-Recent changes to my portfolio; what I’m buying and selling.
-A hopeful message, and a reminder to keep things in perspective during difficult times.
Number 3-The First Shale Revolution: Humble Beginnings-Peter Zeihan:
The recent Pioneer deal signals the end of an era as the super majors now dominate shale production. So, what does that mean for US shale? While there will be less innovation and slower production growth, ExxonMobil will provide more stability to the industry.
So, how did the US use all that crude oil and natural gas produced during the first shale revolution? As the need for industrial expansion grew, so did the American refining industry’s footprint.
Number 4-Uranium Sector Summary
The Uranium market is extremely tight over the next 12 to 24 months as demand continues to rise, while new supplies are taking more time to materialize, and inventories keep getting drawn down.
Number 6-B.C. slams door on operators of multiple vacation rentals - Victoria Times Colonist
https://www.timescolonist.com/local-news/bc-slams-door-on-operators-of-multiple-vacation-rentals-7692982
Number 7-This BC Policy will make the cost of living the least of our worries.
Natural resources are the foundation of our industrial economy, writes Margareta Dovgal.
But under CleanBC, both could be wiped out with drastic consequences for the cost of living.
Number 8- How the Supreme Court's Decision on Environmental Law Could Reshape Canada-Rumble Room with Ellis Ross
While the BC Government remains silent, other Premiers are applauding the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling against much of Ottawa’s Environmental Impact Law and its power to delay or halt energy projects over provincial objections. BC Energy Critic Ellis Ross says this could be a major wedge issue in how Canada should be governed in the future.

Number 9-Blew Jays Redux: Passing The Buck
The man Schneider and Atkins were hired to improve upon— Canadian Alex Anthopoulos— has made the Atlanta Braves a dominant team. Since AA moved to Atlanta, they’ve won a World Series and two other playoff series. They’ve developed young everyday superstars who don’t get picked off second base. They have built a pitching staff largely from within, not splashy FA signings. They are set for years to come. That’s the measuring stick, Mr. Shapiro.
Number 10- Sir Laurence Olivier Recites Shakespeare | The Dick Cavett Show - YouTube
Sir Laurence talks about how important theatre is and he says it is “the glamorizing of thought…..A theatre is to my mind the outward visible sign of an inward, probable culture…it is important to have a theatre like this in every country.”
He closes by reading a sonnet from Shakespeare which was his favorite.
We hope you found the Top Ten interesting this week, and are looking forward to another selection of articles, stories, and commentary next week. If you know of anyone else who would be interested in receiving our weekly note, please let me know.
