Top 10 Observations: Week of June 2nd, 2023

By June 2, 2023 June 26th, 2023 No Comments

Hello

We start the top ten with the big news out of Alberta; Danielle Smith is again the Premier. We included the Bloomberg summary and it sure was a rural vs city vote.

The brilliant Jeff Currie of Goldman was a podcast guest, and he continues his bullish thesis on oil and copper. This past year has all been about ‘de-stocking’, but he thinks it will end and sees oil at $97 USD by year end.

As we all know, we have lost so many manufacturing jobs over the decades and Frank Stronach provides some solutions to this matter.

On the housing issues, we first have David Rosenberg who gives his overview and solutions for Ottawa. He, once again, focuses on the immigration issues we have. Then, Steve Saretsky mentions that people do not put in enough consideration to the fact that our Universities are a big part of this.

The CEO of BCE is not happy with all the ‘interventionist’ regulations and the story included highlights his issues. This reminds me of a contact on Onex who takes care of the WestJet file. After Onex’s successful purchase of a US carrier, they thought they could have success buying WestJet. Little did they know that government, union, media, and other sectors would consume management’s time so much more than in the US.

Eric Nuttall was on BNN and yes, Eric likes the Canadian Energy Sector.

A story from UnHerd shows you that Tinder now includes dogs in their platform.

David Brooks again writes a beautiful tribute about a close connection who passed away and David explains how Tim Keller taught him joy. David is such a great writer.

Speaking of joy, I love connecting people and one of my fondest memories is connecting Darrel Fox and Rob Reid with Jack Lohman of the Royal BC Museum. The two had coffee with me and asked me if they could get help on requesting a Terry Fox exhibit at our provincial museum. With Canada’s 150th year coming up the next year, I thought a 2017 summer exhibit would be perfect and with the help of the management team at the time, Jack agreed. In the months before the opening, I got to meet Bill Vigars who was the key person who helped Terry Fox’s run through Ontario and made it the success it was. I have many stories to share but a much better way is to order Bill’s book called Terry & Me”.  (links to order are included)  Robert Duvall played Bill in the Terry Fox movie and Bill’s behind scenes contributions to that run in 1980 was insurmountable. As you see with the pic included, Bill is a tall guy like me.

Have a great weekend.

Number 2 - Why the ‘great de-stocking’ in oil and commodities could pave the way for future gains

Oil and commodity prices have fallen this year amid unprecedented declines in inventories. But this “great de-stocking” could also pave the way for strong gains if the economy avoids a recession given solid fundamentals and overall demand, explains Jeff Currie, global head of commodities in Goldman Sachs Research.

Number 4 - The Liberals helped fuel this egregious housing crisis. Here’s how they could help end it.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/markets/inside-the-market/article-ottawa-should-seriously-consider-a-less-ambitious-immigration-policy/

The bizarre way the Trudeau government has dealt with an epic housing affordability crisis in Canada has been to exacerbate the demand-supply imbalance by pursuing the most aggressive pro-immigration policy on record. As a result, population growth keeps climbing, with Canada seeing its highest ever annual growth rate at 2.7 per cent – or more than a million people – last year . This is truly insane.

The problem is that the country does not have the adequate supply, especially when it comes to residential real estate, to absorb this sort of immigration-led population growth without exerting further strains on the stretched housing market. The ratio of population to housing stock is 40 per cent above historical norms. And the same is true for the homeowner affordability ratio.

Number 6 - Bell CEO warns 'interventionist' regulations could lead telcos to curtail investments.

Speaking at a lunch hosted by Canadian Club Toronto, Bibic took aim at the federal government and Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for a shift “towards more micromanagement of Canada’s telecom industry.”

Number 7 - Eric Nuttall's Market Outlook

Eric Nuttall discusses his outlook for the markets (picks were CVE, WCP and HWX).

Number 8 - Why Gen Z prefers dogs to babies - Tinder is now selling a childless dream

https://unherd.com/2023/05/why-gen-z-prefer-dogs-to-babies/?tl_inbound=1&tl_groups[0]=18743&tl_period_type=3&mc_cid=ae4770a3fa&mc_eid=a5517c2b74

In the face of all this, it’s no wonder many who have absorbed some variant of this message simply embrace it and set out to enjoy the panoply of expressive sexual and emotional options now presented, without judgement, for selection. And this means sidelining parenthood: for within that paradigm, the organismic urge to reproduce, with all the limits it opposes on those expressive options, presents itself not as an aspect of becoming fully human, but an obstacle to the infinite ways in which we might do so. Self-neutering is now, as the vet suggested of spaying Saffy, self-actualisation. And should some glimmer of the ancient drive to care for dependents nonetheless fight its way to the surface, Tinder’s latest ad campaign has the answer.

Number 9 - Tim Keller Taught Me About Joy - David Brooks

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/22/opinion/tim-keller-death.html?searchResultPosition=1

Tim was confident, cheerful and at peace as he spiraled down toward death and up toward his maker. His passing has made us all very sad, but if you go back and listen to his sermons, which you should, you come back to gratitude for his life and to the old questions: Death, where is your victory? Where is your sting?

We hope you found the Top Ten interesting this week, and are looking forward to another selection of articles, stories, and commentary next week. If you know of anyone else who would be interested in receiving our weekly note, please let me know.
