Top 10 Observations: Week of Nov 24th, 2023

By November 30, 2023 No Comments

Hello,

As we embark on the US Thanksgiving weekend, our journey begins with a comprehensive overview of the budget update from Bloomberg.

Diving into the discourse surrounding net-zero policies, a thought-provoking commentary sets the stage, followed by the second part of Jack Mintz’s analysis, shedding light on Canada’s perceived lag in this domain.

Shifting our focus, concerns surrounding immigration policies prompt a reflection by Colby Cash, exploring how Sweden is adapting after years of aligning with Canada’s approach.

Vaughn Palmer is a veteran at the Vancouver Sun, but he still has the energy and desire to question and inquire about things. I know many business groups in BC believe that the new CleanTech guidelines in BC will have harmful effects. I am happy that Vaughn wrote a great piece on the subject, and I hope it gets more attention.

Within our community, Airbnb rule changes have left a lasting impact, and a compelling piece delves into the consequences. It’s a poignant exploration, with numerous stories revealing the human side of these changes, such as the recent listings of 173 Airbnb places in Victoria, with only 17 finding new owners.

The unfolding drama at ChatGPT is encapsulated in a fascinating summary by Vox.com, offering an insightful perspective on this crucial area.

In moments of economic challenge, the wisdom of treasured economists becomes particularly valuable. I share an article from the Washington Post about Milton Friedman, offering a retrospective on his enduring influence.

Charlie Munger is a treasure in our industry and a story included shows how he had overcome many challenges.

As we mark the 60th anniversary of that somber day in Dallas, a poignant story unfolds, featuring one of the last living secret service personnel connected to the assassination of JFK Jr.

Wishing you a restful and enjoyable weekend.

Best regards,

David

Number 2-Net-zero policies colliding with economic reality | Financial Post

https://financialpost.com/opinion/net-zero-policies-colliding-economic-reality

What we are witnessing are not bumps in the road to an inevitable clean energy transition but evidence of socio-economic realities unravelling the politics of net zero — including the fiction that we must urgently and radically re-engineer our societies to stop a supposed climate catastrophe that in fact isn’t.

Number 3-Part II: Canada slipping behind-Jack Mintz

https://financialpost.com/opinion/forget-identity-politics-growth-investment-canada-top-priorities

Something to think about as the economic update comes out this week from Canada’s Minister of Finance. According to IMF statistics, our share of world GDP (in purchasing-power-parity dollars), has fallen six per cent, from 1.44 per cent in 2018 to 1.36 per cent in 2023. We shouldn’t even be a G7 country anymore: in PPP dollars our economy is only the world’s 16th biggest, right behind Spain. But that’s the past.  What about the future? In 2021, the OECD projected that our economy would perform worse this decade than all other member countries, with per capita real GDP growing only 0.7 per cent annually — though at least that would be an improvement over the past five years. The big question is why Canada is at the bottom of the heap

Number 4-Colby Cosh: Sweden dispenses with the Canada model of immigration

Reaction to Sweden’s very loose requirements for foreign guest workers from outside the EU has caused a major shift in policy
