Top 10 Observations: Week of April 14th, 2023

By April 14, 2023 May 26th, 2023 No Comments

Hello

We start the top ten with two very interesting podcasts. Mark Mills of the Manhattan Institute again gives an excellent summary where we are at with the ‘energy transition’ story.

Then Adam Rozencwajg was on Macro Voices, and he again does a brilliant job proving an overview of the commodity space.

The Federal Justice Minister made a statement this week and it sure got the attention of some premiers and business leaders.

Steve Saretsky’s weekly piece touches on a subject that will have huge ramifications on the housing industry and how neighborhoods may evolve.

There are some huge issues connecting with the grid for solar and wind projects as CNBC explains.

The Fraser Institute highlighted the backlog of surgeries we have in Canada and the wait times. They also provide some lessons from jurisdictions where outcomes are so much better.

Bitcoin Mining sure has some real-world costs and an in-depth piece from the NY Times is included.

The former BofC Governor thinks interest rates are declining in the second half of 2023 and that is something Jim Thorne has been saying for sometime.

Foundations like the WE Foundation and now the Trudeau Foundation have illustrated how poorly things can be run when the political and corporate world interfere.

It was 43 years ago yesterday when Terry Fox started his ‘Marathon of Hope’. They have raised over $850M and his Foundation is the gold standard when dealing with conflicts of interest and any political and corporate interference. In 2016 I introduced Darrell Fox and Rob Reid to Jack Lohman and a year later, the Terry Fox exhibit was at the RBCM during our 150th year celebrations. I learned during that time meeting the Fox Family how important the Terry Fox brand was and how they protected it like no other. It gives you a great feeling knowing we have Foundations like this and like our own Victoria Foundation who have such high ethical standards.

The Masters was a highly anticipated event due to the inclusion of the LIV players. Bruce Dowbiggin gives his take on the tourney and Phil sure surprised us all.

Number 1 - The Energy Transition…delayed, with Mark Mills

https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-hc-insider-podcast/id1512721188?i=1000608515924

How long will the energy transition take? The challenges are underestimated. Energy consumption will continue to expand as emerging economies develop, and as new classes of technologies emerge (not least AI where its inherent power consumption is an order of magnitude more than conventional computing). The switch from fuels that are mainly liquids and gases to hardware-intensive technologies like wind, solar and batteries, requires enormous quantities of materials; the supply chains for which are already stretched. And if the energy transition is to be delayed, what should we be doing to prepare and are there other options than those being chased now ? Our guest is Mark Mills, author, investor, policy advisor and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute.

Number 2 - MacroVoices #370 Adam Rozencwajg: Energy, Gold, Copper & Uranium

Number 4 - Steve Saretsky - Missing Middle

It is happening, more supply cometh. While land owners will benefit in the near term with a lift in land values, families will benefit in the longer run with a wider selection of much needed ground-oriented housing supply. With a million people flooding into this country last year, it’s time to get out of the way and get building.

Number 7 - NY Times: The Real-World Costs of the Digital Race for Bitcoin

“Well researched and insightful on how bitcoin ‘mines’ make money by stopping their operations during power consumption peak times”

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/09/business/bitcoin-mining-electricity-pollution.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

In Rockdale, where two of the largest mines in the country operate just outside the city limits, the city manager, Barbara Holly, told The Times that the town used to be “a fairly wealthy little community.” She said that changed when a large industrial plant that had provided thousands of jobs closed more than a decade ago. “It just cut the legs out from under this community,” she said.

It was the old aluminum smelter, now home to the Bitdeer mine.

Number 10 - LIV & Let LIV: Phil Mickelson Gets His Revenge

http://www.notthepublicbroadcaster.com/i-dont-like-mondays/2023/4/9/liv-amp-let-liv-mickelson-gets-his-revenge

Revenge, it is said, is a dish best served cold. If so, it’s appropriate that in the teeming rain, chilling winds and falling trees of Augusta National this weekend that Phil Mickelson got a measure of gotcha’ on the PGA Tour.

We hope you found the Top Ten interesting this week, and are looking forward to another selection of articles, stories, and commentary next week. If you know of anyone else who would be interested in receiving our weekly note, please let me know.
